Forty Years of Light

A birthday reflection by Megan Smart Photography

There’s something about turning 40 that feels both steady and electric — like watching the sun rise and realizing you’ve been standing in the glow all along.

This season of life isn’t about chasing what’s next; it’s about noticing what’s here. The quiet mornings. The laughter that lines your face. The peace that comes from knowing who you are — and who you no longer need to be.

Photography has been my way of holding onto light — not just the kind that filters through a window or sets behind a hill, but the kind that lives in people. Every session, every story, every fleeting in-between moment has taught me something about grace, timing, and the beauty of paying attention.

As I step into this next decade, I’m less focused on perfect and more devoted to present. To the small things that shimmer in ordinary days. To growth, gratitude, and the gentle unfolding of becoming.

A Note of Gratitude

As I look back on the years that brought me here, one truth stands out: I wouldn’t be standing in this light without the people who trusted me long before I trusted myself.

To the friends and families who let me practice in those early days — who stood in front of a wobbly camera, who let me pose them on porches and in fields and in living rooms, who believed in my eye long before my experience caught up — thank you. You gave me space to learn, and that generosity shaped everything that came after.

To every couple, mama, senior, and family who has invited me into your life year after year — thank you for building this business with me. Your celebrations, your milestones, your referrals, your return sessions… those weren’t just bookings. They were acts of faith. You whispered my name to your people, and because of you, my work has grown into a life I’m grateful for every single day.

To the vendors, venues, planners, florists, photographers, and industry friends who opened doors and shared their wisdom — thank you for taking chances on me. For believing in what I create. For cheering me on, for collaborating with joy, and for teaching me that community is the heart of creativity.

Friends — My First Clients

And to my friends — my very first clients, my cheerleaders, my “stand right here while I try something new” crew. You showed up long before this was a business, long before I had a style or a plan, long before I really knew what I was doing. You stood in front of my lens with patience, humor, and so much grace.

Every session with you held a little piece of life — the ups, the downs, the in-betweens. You listened to my stories, celebrated my wins, steadied me through the hard seasons, and somehow we always ended up laughing by the end. Those early sessions were more than practice; they were tiny lifelines, reminding me that I was meant to do this.

You are the foundation of this business. Truly.
Without your smiles, your laughter, your trust, and your willingness to show up for me again and again, I never would have had the chance to grow into the photographer — and the woman — I am today. You believed in me before I believed in myself, and stepping into 40, I’m celebrating you just as much as this milestone.

My Parents and Family

To my parents and family — thank you for being my constant, steady source of light through every season of this journey. You have believed in me from the very beginning, even before I fully believed in myself.

Thank you for all the late-night conversations, the pep talks, the “You’ve got this” texts, and every word of encouragement that seemed to arrive exactly when I needed it. You have an incredible way of lifting me up without ever making it feel heavy.

Thank you for location scouting with me — wandering backroads, pointing out beautiful trees and pockets of light, humoring me as I slammed on the brakes because “Wait, this spot is perfect!” You saw the world with me long before I had clients who trusted my eye.

Thank you for being my quiet social media hype squad — liking every post, cheering on every gallery, celebrating every little win. Those tiny gestures may seem small, but they built confidence, momentum, and visibility in ways you probably don’t even realize.

Thank you for networking for me long before I had a name in the community — telling your friends, coworkers, and anyone who would listen, “My daughter is a photographer. You should see her work.” Word of mouth was my first marketing strategy, and you were the one who made it powerful.

Your pride has been one of the greatest gifts of my life.
Your faith in me has been a steady, shining light.

And I hope, in some small way, this milestone — this business — this dream turned reality — reflects the love and support you’ve poured into me from the beginning.

You are woven into every part of this story.

My Little Family

And to my little family — thank you for being the quiet, steady heartbeat behind this dream. Thank you for every late night you stayed up waiting for me to walk through the door after a wedding, for every “When are you gonna be home?” text that reminded me I was missed, and for every sleepy hug when I finally made it back.

Thank you for the nights I came home aching from head to toe — especially the unforgettable weekend I photographed three weddings in three days — and you rubbed my ankles without a single complaint. Thank you for the countless Sundays you let me sleep in, tiptoeing around the house while you made breakfast because you knew I had worked past midnight the night before.

You’ve loved me through the busy seasons, the exhausted ones, the creatively full ones, and even the creatively empty ones. You’ve celebrated every win, steadied every wobble, and cheered me forward even when my schedule felt overwhelming.

You’ve given me room to grow, space to create, and a home to rest in. Your love is the part of my story no one sees, but it’s the light that makes all the other light possible.

Reflection

Stepping into forty feels less like crossing a line and more like opening a window — one that looks out over everywhere I’ve been and everywhere I still hope to go. There’s a different kind of light here, one that feels earned. Softer in some places, stronger in others. A light shaped by years of showing up, learning, failing, trying again, and growing into someone I’m proud of.

When I look back at the last two decades — the early shoots with borrowed gear, the late nights editing at the kitchen table, the long drives to weddings with butterflies in my stomach — I see a younger version of myself who was trying so hard to find her place. And now, standing here, I realize that every step, every season, every story I’ve photographed has brought me exactly to this moment.

Forty feels like a gentle pause between what has been and what’s still waiting to unfold. A space to breathe, to take it all in, to acknowledge how far I’ve come and to trust that the best parts of the journey are still ahead. I’m carrying with me the lessons, the laughter, the losses, the victories, and the golden in-between moments that have shaped both my art and my heart.

I’m stepping into this decade with gratitude for what’s behind me and genuine excitement for what’s next — new stories, new light, new people to meet, new creative seasons to bloom in.

If the next forty years hold even a fraction of the beauty the first forty have given me, then I know I’m walking forward in the right direction — one frame, one breath, one beam of light at a time.

If you’ve been part of this journey — or if you’re new here and thinking about inviting me into yours — I’d love to connect.
