Light Around the Table | Megan Smart

A Thanksgiving Reflection by Megan Smart Photography

There’s a kind of light that only appears when people gather — soft, golden, unhurried.
It’s the light that flickers between candles, glows off glassware, and catches in the laughter that floats across a table.

At a recent wedding, the couple chose to skip the formal reception and host a family-style dinner instead — one long table, candles running down the center, the smell of food and joy mingling in the cool evening air. As I photographed them passing plates and stories, I realized how much this moment felt like Thanksgiving.

It wasn’t grand or extravagant — just simple, intentional, and full of warmth. The bride and groom moved from seat to seat, refilling glasses and hugging relatives, making sure everyone felt included. Their families leaned close, hands brushing as dishes passed, voices soft with love.

Every time I photograph a table like this, I’m reminded that gratitude doesn’t need a holiday. It lives in these moments — in the hands that serve, in the quiet pauses between conversations, in the glow that gathers when people share something real.

Reflection

This Thanksgiving, I’m especially thankful for the couples and families who’ve invited me into their stories — for the laughter, the light, and the love that always finds its way around the table.

Here’s to the beauty of simple gatherings, to the people who make them meaningful, and to the light we carry forward, one season at a time.
